Strike Against Fire and Rehire Disrupts Leisure Services

The strike by UNISON members at Sandwell Leisure Trust severely disrupted services at Portway Lifestyle Centre and Tipton Leisure Centre on 25 June. Support from the public was strong on all picket lines with many refusing to attend Smethwick Swimming Baths in support of staff fighting being fired and rehired.

Support was also received from Dudley TUC and Labour Councillor Kerrie Carmichael, who turned up at Portway Lifestyle Centre. (see picture)

Regional Secretary for UNISON, Ravi Subramanian, visited picket lines too.

Press coverage of the dispute was good. See https://www.halesowennews.co.uk/news/19393746.sandwell-leisure-centre-staff-strike-fire-rehire-contracts/

And the strike was reported on BBC News.

It’s time that the Labour controlled Council fixed this dispute.
