Black Lives Matter – Stand Up to Racism online event

Sandwell General UNISON has sponsored the attached event. With UNISON’s national conference being cancelled this online event is now open to all members to attend. Below is a message from the organiser.

Dear Branch Secretary/Chair/Officer,

I’d like to thank your branch/committee for agreeing to sponsor the online event that Camden UNISON has organised for next week on Soul and the Civil Rights Movement. As you’ll know, our branch has been proud to organise a meeting and fundraising gig for Stand Up To Racism each year at National Conference, and this event is on the night that would have been held, Wednesday 17 June. We thought doing this was a great opportunity for branches that had sponsored previous events to keep connected with each other around the question of how we challenge racism, and that this was a way to keep the flavour of music and anti-racist campaigning that our last 4 events have had.

After we had decided to organise this, George Floyd was murdered by the police in the US, and a new wave of resistance has begun. In our branch, we decided it’s more important than ever that we make this as successful as possible – knowing our history so that we are well-placed to fight for our future is essential.

Attached is a flyer for the event. We will have an introduction by Roger McKenzie, UNISON Assistant General Secretary, and it will be live streamed from 7pm on the Camden UNISON Facebook page. It would be great if you can circulate details amongst your members and ask them to join us next week, and feel free to circulate the attached flyer as far and wide as possible.

I hope to see you next week,

No Justice, No Peace,

Liz
