This autumn, the government will restore the School Support Staff Negotiating Body (SSSNB) in England, a new body that will be made up of representatives from recognised trade unions (UNISON, GMB and Unite), employer bodies, and an independent chair.
The SSSNB will negotiate key issues such as pay, terms and conditions, and vital training for all school support staff in state-funded schools in England, ensuring a unified, nationally agreed approach.
UNISON has been involved in discussions to shape the new body from the outset, because we believe that having a negotiating system dedicated to school support staff will give you a real voice.
It will enable UNISON to focus on the specific priorities and needs of school support staff, who have been overlooked for too long. That’s why we are consulting members to ask whether you agree with the proposals. The consultation will run from 15 September to 6 October 2026 and the national School Sector
Committee, made up of UNISON members, recommends you vote ‘yes’.
School support staff should check your emails and look out for your vote.
